One of the most celebrated works by Marchetta, a popular Australian author, this is a very enjoyable and entertaining read. Documenting a year in the life of an Australian girl of Italian background during a time of great change in the world, Marchetta maintains a good understanding of her characters and the way different characters of different cultures interact. The book’s main let down was it’s final few chapters, which introduce a variety of twists to the story without providing the time for things to be adequately resolved, leaving readers feeling a bit unfulfilled upon finishing the book. Nevertheless, there is enough interest and cultural importance here to make it worth a read. Recommended for ages 14-18. Contains coarse language, sexual references, brief violence and mature themes.
